A BRUSH WITHOUT A CANVAS
In a small studio space tucked away in a busy Kampala suburb, Rebecca spent her days creating vibrant, powerful paintings that told stories of Ugandan life. Her art was brilliant, but her audience was limited to a few friends and neighbors. The dream of being a full-time artist felt impossible.
"I had so much I wanted to say with my art, but no one was listening," Rebecca recalls. "I was close to giving up, to storing my paints away and finding a different job just to survive."
A SPOTLIGHT IN THE DARK
Through our Arts & Culture program, we discovered Rebecca's work. We were immediately struck by her raw talent and the powerful narratives in her paintings. We knew we had to help.
Our intervention was simple but strategic:
- Professional Photoshoot: We hired a professional photographer to capture high-quality images of her and her artwork.
- Artist Spotlight: We featured her story and portfolio on our website and across our social media channels, reaching over 200,000 people.
- Connection: We introduced her to a local gallery owner who was impressed by her digital portfolio.
FROM STRUGGLING ARTIST TO RISING STAR
The response was overwhelming. Within a week of the spotlight, Rebecca received inquiries from buyers in Uganda and abroad.
- She sold five paintings in the first month.
- She received a commission for a large piece from a hotel in Entebbe.
- The local gallery offered her a spot in their upcoming group exhibition.
"It was like a dream," she says, a wide smile on her face. "For the first time, I could pay rent, buy more art supplies, and support my mother, all with money I earned from my own art. Kulture Foundation didn't give me a handout; they gave me a microphone."
