From Dropout to Dreams: Amina's Story

Amina, 14, was forced to drop out of school. See how a small investment in school fees reignited her dream of becoming a teacher and changed her family's future.

THE STRUGGLE

Amina used to wake up at 5 AM every day—not to go to school, but to help her mother sell vegetables in the market.

School felt like a distant memory.

She had dropped out a year ago when her father passed away and the family could no longer afford the fees.

"I would watch other kids in uniforms walking to school and feel ashamed. I wanted to learn so badly, but my mother was struggling just to feed us," Amina says, eyes downcast.

Her dream? To become a teacher. But dreams don't pay school fees.

THE TURNING POINT

That's when Kulture Foundation met Amina's family.

Through our Family Support & Education Program, we learned about Amina's situation:

  • Dropped out 1 year ago
  • Mother earning approximately 8,000 UGX per day
  • 2 siblings also affected
  • School fees needed: 250,000 UGX per term

We knew we had to act.

THE INTERVENTION

What We Provided:

  • School fees for one term: 250,000 UGX
  • Complete uniform: 45,000 UGX
  • Scholastic materials (books, pens, bag): 35,000 UGX
  • Total Investment: 330,000 UGX ($88 USD)

But we didn't just hand over money. We:

  1. Visited the school and spoke with teachers.
  2. Met with Amina's mother to understand the full family situation.
  3. Committed to follow-up and continued support.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Today, Amina is back in P6.

"When I put on my uniform the first day back, I cried. I never thought I'd get this chance again," she says.

Her teachers report that Amina is working hard and catching up quickly.

"Amina doesn't take this opportunity for granted. She studies harder than anyone," says Mr. Okello, her science teacher.

Amina's mother is equally transformed:

"I can't thank Kulture Foundation enough. They didn't just help my child—they gave our whole family hope. Now I can focus on work knowing Amina is in school learning."

THE ONGOING JOURNEY

Amina's story isn't over. She still faces challenges, but now, she has a CHANCE. And that's everything.

What's Next:

  • Kulture Foundation will continue monitoring Amina's progress.
  • We'll provide additional support if emergencies arise.
  • Our goal: See Amina complete school and achieve her dream of becoming a teacher.
